This is exactly the kind of archival compilation we're completely unable to resist. Subtitled "The first wave of plugged-in pop at the Pakistani Picture House", this amazing 15 track set delivers mind-bending studio techniques and lost-in-translation quirkiness in equal measure. The opening track from M Ashraf combines Raymond Scott style bleepy craziness with heavy heavy drums, lo-fi psychedelics and a broken English delivery exclaiming "This is the Song of Wonder" over a truly unhinged morse-code style electronic freakout that has to be heard to be believed. "Ho Jeth Ji Aaj Main" combines strummed-out, traditional song with berzerk analogue synth arrangements and truly bonkers breakdowns that are at once extremely funny and jaw-droppingly ingenious, while "I Am Very Sorry" gives it deep percussive pressure, funked up strings and a scuzzy and completely out of this world vibe. The combination of transistor-style, almost tinny recording techniques and sheer electronic experimentation imbues these pieces with so much more than the patronising, pastiche style narrative of so many compilations we've heard from this part of the musical universe. Amazing stuff.
