"This album was recorded in Mirik Monastery, situated in the north east of India, with the collaboration of Bokar Rimpoche a master of Tibetan Buddhism and meditation. The sounds on the disc correspond to the film Bokar Rimpoche: Maitre De Meditation, both the film and album having been edited by Guy Maezelle, who has captured the sacred chants and ritual music of the monks at Mirik for posterity. Presumably it's a pretty rare privilege to be given this kind of access to the routines and spiritual life of a monastery, and it's especially revelatory listening to the twenty-five minute 'Mahakala Ceremony' towards the end of the disc, which features mass chanting and the use of a variety of horn and percussion-based musical instruments. You wouldn't necessarily expect it, but for a Buddhist monastery it all sounds a bit intense at times. This being Sub Rosa, there's always a bit of time dedicated to more abstract, unusual sound matter as well. In addition to some gorgeous Tibetan bowl drones you'll find environmental recordings on here: the disc begins with a brief mountain soundscape, capturing a scene in the Himalayas, and concludes with the hushed babble and birdsong of life by a river in the Mirik forest."
