"Armando Trovajoli's score for Ettore Scola's story of a multi-generational family -- served up with just the right sort of tones to fit the story! The music here is a fair bit warmer and more sentimental than Trovajoli's work of a few decades before -- much more in the space that Ennio Morricone was hitting with some of his bigger film scores of the 80s -- and done in tones that echo history and family with every note. The style's never cloying or commercial, though -- and like Morricone, Trovajoli succeeds through understatement -- keeping the backings subdued at most moments, and letting smaller instrumental voices take center stage."
