Semele est un chef-d'oeuvre. Car comment appeler autrement un drame dont la parfaite communion du texte et de la musique offre un tel pouvoir de suggestion ? « Tenir l'esprit, les oreilles et les yeux dans un égal enchantement » : cette recommandation de La Bruyère ( Caractères : Les ouvrages de l'esprit ) visait le « théâtre en machines » si adulé du public à l'époque baroque. Mais même sans machineries ni, même, sans décors ni réelle mise en scène, l'oratorio de Handel nous associe avec une totale efficacité au destin tragique de son héroïne. [Outhere-Music]
