Peu de gens connaissent aujourd'hui Maxwell Davis (1937-1970), celui qui fut l'homme clef du jazz californien. Saxophoniste ténor, compositeur, arrangeur, superviseur, recruteur pour les labels du coin, etc., Maxwell Davis a joué un rôle primordial pour le jazz de la côte Ouest, pendant les années 40 et plus ! On le trouve à coté de Pete Johnson, Big Joe Turner, Gene Philips, Jimmy Witherspoon, Lloyd Glenn, T-Bone Walker...et bien d'autres. Son travail lui a valu le titre de "Father of West Coast R&B;"
Le CD1 est consacré aux meilleurs enregistrements publiés à son nom entre 1945 et 1956, alors que sur le CD 2 & 3 se sont des enregistrements (années 40 et 50 respectivement) sur lesquelles Davis apparaît comme accompagnateur. Les labels auxquels Davis est associé ont eu une importance majeure dans la promotion des principaux acteurs du "Post war R&B;": Aladdin/Philo, Modern/RPM, Imperial/Colony , King/Federal, Exclusive/Excelsior, Specialty, Down Beat/Swing Time and Black & White. Des grands major comme; Capitol, Decca/Brunswick, Mercury et RCA Victor, aux plus petits comme; Supreme, Pacific, Miltone ou Chesterfield.
