The first thing that strikes me about Weedeater's fourth full-length 'Jason... The Dragon' is that it literally sounds heavy. You might think that's a pretty dumb thing to level at a metal record, but plenty of metal records sound like damp cardboard to me and this one, well, doesn't. At all. This might be down to the involvement of a certain Mr. Steve Albini, and his treatment of the record is pretty much crucial to taking their songs from jammy, sludged-out metal all the way to the crushing ear-gasms they are here. Weedeater are not out to make art here chaps, and while they might be on Southern Lord they're about as far from Sunn O))) as you can get - this is rock music, first and foremost. Just like Sabbath back in the day, these guys are making songs for sweaty rooms full of boys (and possibly girls) to lose their minds while their eardrums are crushed by looooow bass and crushing crisp treble.
