Oeuvre de circonstance composée dans la hâte, l'Occasional Oratorio a été joué avec succès en février 1746. On peut réellement parler d'un acte politique posé par le compositeur pour proclamer sa loyauté au roi d'Angleterre à un moment où les troupes de l'armée de Charles-Edouard Stuart progressaient de l'Ecosse vers le centre du royaume britannique. La conception de cette oeuvre débute en janvier 1746 par l'élaboration d'un livret, tâche confiée à Newburgh Hamilton qui puise dans les Psaumes de John Milton et dans les poèmes d'Edmund Spenser pour chanter la gloire du dieu des armées ou un hymne à la liberté. Sur cet argument patriotique, Haendel compose une musique neuve pour la première partie et recycle des pages existantes pour les deuxième et troisième parties. Timbales et trompettes, trois solistes, un choeur et un orchestre viennent donner du panache à cette fresque dont le compositeur reprendra les meilleurs moments pour Judas Macchabée, Joshua et Samson, composés ultérieurement.
Un « best of » du maitre bien servi par Howard Arman à la tête du Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks et de l'Akademie für Alte Music Berlin avec la soprano Julia Doyle, le ténor Ben Johnson et le baryton Peter Harvey.
