Hans-Christoph Rademann a choisi Elias de Felix Mendelssohn pour débuter sa collaboration avec le RIAS Kammerchor. Composé en 1846, cet oratorio est la dernière grande oeuvre écrite par le compositeur. Il s'appuie sur le récit biblique pour décrire la figure du prophète Elie d'une manière extrêmement vivante. Mendelssohn prend Bach et Haendel comme modèles tout en gardant à la fois son langage propre et un esprit purement romantique. La partition est conçue pour 4 solistes, choeur et grand orchestre avec orgue. Lors de la création, c'est la version en anglais qui a été interprétée. La version en allemand a été entendue pour l'anniversaire du compositeur le 3 février 1848 à Leipzig. C'est cette dernière qui est ici enregistrée.
