Le label Bear Family propose, avec cette compilation, de dévoiler une partie de son travail d'investigation consistant à réunir, à travers des documents d'archives enregistrés, cires et disques 78 tours, l'influence sur le continent européen de musiciens d'origine africaine et afro-américaine. Couvrant ici les trois premières décennies du XXème le choix est ciblé sur deux groupes et deux musiciens : Pete Hampton & Laura Bowman, duo qui s'est illustré dans le circuit du Vaudeville entre 1903 et 1910, au sein duquel Pete Hampton grave les premiers enregistrements d'harmonica ; The Savoy Quartet, en office au Savoy Hotel de Londres entre 1915 et 1920, contribua à populariser le ragtime ; Josiah Jesse Ransome Kuti, le grand père de Fela Kuti (pionnier de l'afrobeat), est connu pour avoir introduit des instruments africains dans les offices religieux à l'église ; enfin Joséphine Baker, considérée comme la première star noire, dont l'ascension se situe à Paris entre 1925 et 1936.
Compilation 3CD accompagnée d'un livret de 88 pages richement documenté, photos, commentaires, avec informations précises sur les formations musicales et les sources d'enregistrements.
